How does the current Covid-19 situation affect your graffiti work ?
firstly I consider doing writing, rather than graffiti. Graffiti terminology came in the 1970s when the New York authorities sought to qualify this phenomenon, and it was rather derogatory of them. the initial terminology, the one that the precursors found is “writing” I prefer to use the terminology of the inventors of this practice rather than that of certain observers belonging to a generation who did not understand the importance of appropriating the world, or at least to want to steal it from the dominant powers. I was not able to travel too much, but during the first lockdown I was able to take pictures and videos with almost no one in the streets. of course being in the street to tag when there was nobody around was complicated at first, I didn’t know how in this extraordinary situation people would react. also we are easily more spotted when we are alone in the street. but I was able to tag places that I would never normally have been able to tag because it is always crowded.
When did you become interested in graffiti and why ?
it was progressive, multi-factorial. In the 80s it was starting to be fashionable. it was in the media, in fashion, in music… The culture permeated it. it really clicked when I saw this drawing when I was in fifth grade. My girlfriend came back with a beautiful lettering done in pencil on paper. I thought to myself: waw I want to do the same and even better, from there I started to draw letters. I did a few tags and then I had a long time where I got very interested in surrealism. One day when I was around 18 I decided to devote a lot more time to writing, then around my 20s it became my exclusive focus.
Did you graduate in Fine Art as well ?
yes I studied at the Beaux-Arts in Paris as well as at the Sorbonne-Pantheon.
How was the French graffiti culture when you first sprayed ?
at the start of the 1990s, it has been almost ten years since futura 2000, bando, psyckoze, jonone, joey starr … had set milestones, the album covers were designed by colt, mode two, paco rabanne, jack lang, and d others had already made a significant contribution to making hip-hop culture known here.
What is the charm of graffiti for you ?
the word graffiti has no charm for me, but that of writing has all the power of the dream, through writing, this noble activity creates the world for itself. William Blake writes in the proverbs of hell that what is imagined becomes reality, by writing we can create all kinds of utopias that can qualify ideologies and perhaps make the world a better place. The world is also transmitted through writing, it is writing, these corpus of symbols that materialize ideas, eternises, and allow us to be able to transmit knowledge that we enrich in order to go to the moon, build quantum computers or even sharing Epicurean worlds.
What is your present graffiti style ?
my lettering style is inspired by English calligraphy, bastard which I mix with mathematical elements, chess pieces, flowers, sushi …since my trip to moscow, i have opted for large outlines that allow the letter to stand out, give it rhythm with its full and thin lines while avoiding spending too much time on it. I might just have to go back to Berlin to get back to the three ds. but I love this style created in the urgency of a night on the tracks in minus 3 degrees.
You also have a unique style and approach in bombing. You look beautiful and aggressive at the same time. Please note that this is a compliment but what inspired you to go out and do that ?
It’s multifactorial, first of all I’m like that, it’s my personality, I didn’t want to give up a part of me in a universe, writing, essentially masculine and built with masculine concepts. I brought my touch of femininity. I love fashion, as a kid I made dresses for my favorite white plush cat, or I designed women wearing extravagant dresses. I also think that seeing other girls on the internet assume their femininity in a man’s universe inspired me. When it comes to going out and tagging, I think it’s also in my personality, I like to take risks (it’s one of the personality traits of creative people, without this risk-taking you don’t think outside the box , we do not dare to innovate, we are satisfied with what we know, and which reassures us), try to bring out the best of myself (whether in painting, cooking, sport, decoration, everything I do has to be really good, and I do it with intensity. Going outside and expressing the world’s violence on the world through the tag was inspired by the world. I imagine that in a perfect world, without all these problems that we know (global warming, unemployment, war, poverty, animal extinctions …) there would be no tags. We might want to make sculptures expressing beauty of the world, the tag is a criticism, we will not hide it.
How are the reactions of the people around you when they see you performing in a beautiful outfit and doing graffiti bombing ?
I always take care when tagging in front of everyone, people. I look at their faces and I can tell if they are going to say something. I’m waiting for the right time. Not long ago I didn’t wait for the right moment, for example. a guy came up to me asking why i was doing this, i didn’t answer, i was with a friend, he started following me. I quietly gave my bombs and markers to my friend so I wouldn’t have anything on me, and we went our separate ways. From there I looked for a taxi or a car to throw him away. he was following me, telling me if I saw the police, I told them what you did. I was lucky I got in with a guy in his car and 300 yards down the traffic light there was a police car. I had a fur coat, but I could have been in a tracksuit it would have been the same, maybe if I had been a big muscular black he would not have come to see me … Another time I didn’t wait for the right time and a guy to cross the subway car. I had a sequined dress, that’s pretty visible, without that dress I think he wouldn’t have seen me. Having an evening dress in the middle of the day complicates things, people are looking at me before I even start to do anything, I have to be extra careful. This gives more challenge.
Where does the name ‘Lady K’ come from ?
it’s a play on words in french with my first name.
Your peers, The 156 crew is huge with famous members including yourself. How did you get started in this group ?
Psyckoze offered to represent 156, and he told me that when o’clock came in 156 he put it everywhere. From there I was faced with a challenge and I had to represent.
What are you working on besides graffiti ?
I work on the porosity between writing and the physical sciences. I use the aesthetics of writing to represent mathematical formulas. I like to create contrasts between drawing and ink, color and black and white, abstraction and figuration. I start from the postulate that in the infra-thin border of contrast a third place is created which is neither one nor the other but the association of these two places. example between black and white will create an imaginary place, which is proteiform, it will be everything that these two places inspires you, all these associations of ideas that will make you travel, from gray to the checkerboard, by the way by all your other memories …
What kind of impact do you expect or want your work to have on society or people these days ?
I dream of a world where writing could help give life to an epicurean utopia to counter an ideology based on the exploitation of living things which leads to their suffering (global warming, pollution, GMOs, battery farming, unemployment, war…). A world built on the basis of respect for living things.
What kind of graffiti world do you like the most ?
Waspe’s is my favorite: D but it’s subjective, I have a girlfriend who loves Jeiko’s.
What is your work motto ?
There are no problems, only solutions.
