ผมเป็นศิลปินที่รู้จักกันในชื่อ Persue (Persue-sway) ผมมีอาชีพเป็นศิลปิน ผมเคยเล่นสเก็ตบอร์ดและเป็นหนึ่งในผู้ก่อตั้งแบรนด์ดังมากมายตั้งแต่ช่วงต้นทศวรรษ 1990 และผมยังเป็นผู้ก่อตั้ง BunnyKitty และ โปรเจค Wet Paint
สถานการณ์ Covid ช่วงนี้ คุณทำอะไรบ้าง ?
ผมไลฟ์สตรีมใน Twitch เกี่ยวกับงานแสดงศิลปะของผม ผมก็กลับมาเขียนหนังสือภาคต่อจาก Origins of BunnyKitty ผมก็ยังคงทำงานศิลปะอีกจำนวนมากและออกลายใหม่ๆ ให้กับแบรนด์รองเท้าสเก็ตของอเมริกา และทำเสื้อผ้ากับ Li-Ning ในประเทศจีน เช่นเดียวกับศิลปินส่วนใหญ่ในช่วงเวลานี้ ผมสามารถพาตัวเองทำในสิ่งต่างๆและทำงานให้ยุ่งๆ เข้าไว้ มันทำให้ผมรู้สึกดีและผมอยากขอบคุณสิ่งเหล่านี้
ในฐานะศิลปิน สิ่งใดที่เป็นการแก้ไขหรือเป็นการปรับตัวแบบใดต่อสถานการณ์ Covid ของคุณ ?

ศิลปะมันเริ่มเข้ามาในชีวิตคุณได้อย่างไร ?
ผมมาจากครอบครัวที่มีพื้นฐานของความคิดสร้างสรรค์มากๆ อยู่แล้ว บรรพบุรุษได้สืบทอดการเป็นศิลปินและการเป็นผู้กำกับ ดังนั้นเมื่อผมยังเด็ก แม่และยายของผมค้นพบว่าผมมีจิตวิญญาณของการเป็นศิลปิน ดังนั้นพวกเขาจึงเลี้ยงดูผมและถนอมสิ่งที่ผมมีอย่างดีที่สุด
คุณเริ่มสนใจงานกราฟฟิตี้มาตั้งแต่ตอนไหนและเพราะอะไร ?

ว้าว…เวลาผ่านไปเร็วมากและเรื่องราวมันเยอะมากจริงๆ ศิลปินบางคนที่ผมเคยทำงานด้วยอย่าง Mode2, Wane, Can2, Toast, Goal, Dare tws (rip), Bates, MSK Crew, SUK Crew, TVC, Transcend, COD crew Dream (rip) และก็ยังมีอีกหลายคนที่พูดไปก็ไม่หมด มีศิลปินเก่งๆ มีพรสวรรค์มากมายที่อยากจะพูดถึง แล้วก็ยังมีพวกเพื่อนๆ กราฟฟิตี้ที่มีทัศนคติแบบอาชญากรหน่อยๆ เช่นกัน
ช่วงยุคแรกๆ งานของคุณเริ่มจากการ Bombing และ Tags มาบ้างมั้ย ?
ใช่ ในช่วงแรกๆ หลังจากนั้นผมก็เน้นโฟกัสที่สไตล์งานของตัวเองมากขึ้นแล้วก็หวนกลับไปสู่การ Bombing อีกครั้งในปี 2012 แต่ตอนนี้ผมก็สบายๆ ผมไม่ใช่ศิลปินสายบอมบ์อยู่แล้ว แต่ผมแค่ทำในสิ่งที่ผมอยากทำ ซึ่งอาจจะดูมากกว่าที่คนส่วนใหญ่ตระหนัก
เสน่ห์ของงานกราฟฟิตี้ สำหรับคุณคืออะไร ?
สิ่งที่ทำให้ผมหลงใหลในงานกราฟฟิตี้คือการขับเคลื่อนของศิลปิน / writer และการทำงานที่ดำเนินไปพร้อมๆ กันเป็นหนึ่งเดียว
จนปัจุบันนี้ งานของคุณเป็นในแบบสไตล์ไหน ?
มันจะมีกลิ่นอายเล็กๆ ที่มันแทรกซึมไปในทุกๆ แนว ผมรู้ว่ามีหลายสไตล์ตั้งแต่นามธรรมไปจนถึงงาน BunnyKitty ตั้งแต่ผู้บุกเบิกการออกแบบกราฟิก ผมผสมผสานหลายสไตล์เข้าเป็นหนึ่งเดียว ผมอาจจะเป็นผู้ชายที่มาจากยุค Renaissance ก็เป็นได้
นอกจากงานกราฟฟิตี้แล้ว งานในด้านจิตรกรรมของคุณก็น่าสนใจมากๆ เหมือนกัน ช่วยอธิบายให้ฟังที ?
งานวาดภาพบน canvas ในช่วงปีแรกๆ ของผม ผมตั้งใจว่าจะโฟกัสไปที่งานบนกำแพงมากกว่า เพราะการทำบน canvas นั้นมันแคบเกินไป จนมาช่วง 10 ปีให้หลังมานี้ งานบน canvas ได้กลายเป็นอีกหนึ่งงานศิลปะที่มันพัฒนาและมีวิวัฒนาการต่อผมมากที่สุดไปแล้ว ผมไม่กลัวที่จะสร้างตัวเองขึ้นมาใหม่ มีศิลปินที่ผมชื่นชอบบางคนทำแบบเดียวกัน แต่ส่วนใหญ่ก็มักจะเป็นพวกนักดนตรี
สี Spray กับงาน Painting เสน่ห์ของมันสำหรับคุณเป็นอย่างไรบ้าง ?
ผมมีความอดทนต่ำในการรอสีให้แห้ง ดังนั้นสีสเปรย์ตอบโจทย์ผมมากกว่า มันแห้งเร็วดี และก็เป็นเหตุผลเดียวกับที่ผมใช้อะครีลิคบนผืนผ้าใบก็เพราะมันแห้งเร็วเช่นกัน
คุณมีระบบในการทำงานทั้ง 2 แบบอย่างกราฟฟิตี้และจิตรกรรมของคุณ มีวิธีเป็นอย่างไรบ้าง ?

มันคือแมวในชุดกระต่าย ผมวาดภาพกระต่ายและแมวข้างๆ กับงานกราฟฟิตี้ของผมมาหลายปีก่อน แต่มาวันหนึ่งผมตัดสินใจอยากจะรวมทั้งสองเข้าด้วยกัน

Bunnykitty สำหรับผมเป็นเหมือนศิลปะที่เลียนแบบชีวิต ชีวิตของผมและชีวิตของครอบครัวและเพื่อน ๆ ผสมเข้าด้วยกัน มันเป็นเรื่องจริงที่ผมใช้ชีวิตอยู่ในทุกๆ วัน มันไม่ใช่ความแฟนตาซี มันมาจากเรื่องจริง

เอาจริงๆ มันมีที่มาจากแมวจริงๆ ของผม ชื่อเดซี่ เธอยังคงมีชีวิตอยู่ผ่านเจ้าคาแรคเตอร์ BunnyKitty ที่ยังคงสร้างแรงบันดาลใจและสิ่งดีๆให้กับแฟนๆ
เวลาว่างของคุณ นอกจากงานศิลปะและงานกราฟฟิตี้ ?
ผมใช้เวลาส่วนมากอยู่กับครอบครัว ผมชอบออกกำลังกาย เล่นเซิร์ฟ เล่นบาสเก็ตบอลและฟังเพลง ผมชอบที่จะเล่นดนตรีกับเพื่อน ผมเล่นเบสและร้องเพลง
ทุกวันนี้ Graffiti และ Street Art ตั้งแต่จุดเริ่มจนถึงตอนนี้มันเติบโตและมีทิศทางเป็นแบบไหนบ้างในมุมมองของคุณ ?
ผมมองว่าศิลปิน writer มีเรื่องราวคล้ายๆ กับเจไดในสตาร์วอร์ส พวกเขาเกือบจะถูกบดบังด้วยงานสตรีทอาร์ท ดังนั้นเราจึงทำทุกอย่างที่ทำได้เพื่ออนุรักษ์มรดกและบรรพบุรุษของเราที่สร้างวัฒนธรรมกราฟฟิตี้นี้ขึ้นมา ผมจะไม่มีอะไรเลยหากไม่มีพวกเขา ดังนั้นผมจึงสนับสนุนให้ผู้คนในสตรีทอาร์ตและแฟน ๆ ได้เรียนรู้เกี่ยวกับการเคลื่อนไหวต่างๆ เกี่ยวกับงานกราฟฟิตี้ โดยเฉพาะศิลปินที่ใช้สีสเปรย์

ผมเริ่มวาดภาพในเอเชียในช่วงต้นปี 2000 ในเกาหลีใต้, จีน แต่ก็ไม่ได้มีงานใหญ่หรือเอฟเฟกซ์อะไรมากมาย แต่ยุคนี้ก็ถือว่ามาไกลแล้วเหมือนกัน มีศิลปินชั้นยอดที่กำลังผลิตผลงานที่สวยๆ อยู่ในขณะนี้ แต่เมื่อพูดถึงในสาย Letter ผมคงอยากเห็นอิทธิพลและสไตล์ที่มาจากภูมิภาคใดภูมิภาคหนึ่งจริงๆ มากกว่าอินเทอร์เน็ต
ประสบการณ์ในด้านกราฟฟิตี้ของคุณ ที่คุณยังคงประทับใจมากที่สุด ?

Introduce yourself ?
I am the artist known as Persue (persue-sway). In my career as an artist I have played a role in skateboarding as founding artist for many popular brands since the early ‘90s. I am also the creator of BunnyKitty @bunnykittyofficial and Wet Paint @wearewetpaint
What Did You Do During The Covid-19 Pandemic ?
I produced twitch streams and art shows for the art community. I wrote the follow up book to the Origins of BunnyKitty. I produced lots of art and released capsules with American skate brand and shoe and clothing capsules with Li-Ning in China. Like most artists during this time I was able to navigate and stay busy. I am grateful for that.
As an artist, how do you adjust or adapt yourself to this difficult situation ?
I think it helped that I put myself in this difficult situation over 10 years ago when I left my day job in the skateboard industry. So I’ve preparing for this subconsciously by going for an independent art career. When the pandemic hit there we’re still opportunities with collectors and brands. There is a popular saying”The show goes on.” In my case it did.
When and how art has stepped into your life ?
I come from a very creative family. With artists and directors sprinkled through my ancestors. So when I was a little boy my mom and grandmother discovered I had the artists sprit. So they nurtured it the best they could.
What and when got you interested in graffiti art ?
I was introduced to writing in 1988. A classmate and friend Xpek showed me and gave me the name Persue. From that day I was consumed by it.
Tell us about the early days of graffiti, who have you collaborate with, or any impressive stories ?
Wow, so much time has pasted and so many stories. Some artist I painted with coming up…Mode2, Wane, Can2, Toast, Goal, Dare tws (rip), Bates, MSK, SuK, TVC, Transcend, COD crew Dream (rip)…and the list goes on. So many talented people to mention. Some criminal minded folks as well…Ha!
Have you started graffiti by bombing and tagging ?
Yes, initially . Then I was more style focused then got back into the bombing around 2012…now I’ve chilled again. I wasn’t the most prolific bomber but I did do my thing. Probably more than most realize.
What is your style ?
it’s a little bit of all over the place. I am known to have multiple styles from abstract to BunnyKitty. From graphic design pioneer to burners. I am an amalgamation of many styles into one. Somewhat of a Renaissance man.
What are things in graffiti that fascinate you ?
the drive of the artist/writer and the journey one takes in the movement.
Besides your graffiti work, we find your painting interesting, can you tell us about it ?
I didn’t start painting on canvases really until 12 or so years ago. In my early years I had this philosophy that I’d rather keep my art street focused and that canvases were too constricting. There are a few really early canvases floating around but most of my canvas work is in the last decade. The paintings are just an evolution of myself and my work. I am not afraid of reinventing myself some of my favorite artist do or did the same. But mostly musicians.
What’s the appeal of spraypaint and paint to you ?
I have low patience for watching wet paint dry so spray paint is satisfying in that sense, it’s fast. Same reason I use acrylic on my canvases. It drys fast.
How is your work process for graffiti and painting ?
I just commit to the project. I was taught at an early age by my mentor Quasar that endurance is a big part of the process. So I pride myself at staying focused. I think it also helped that I was a production artist and designer in skateboarding for 25 years and I know what it’s like to go to work everyday to help the company. Now I do it for myself.
How do you start a Wet Paint project ?
I saw and opportunity to turn it into a community based art show while telling the story of many of my favorite artist that collaborate with the project. When I found the signs in the subways of NYC while living and working in Brooklyn I had to make money so I painted on a set and loved how they looked. I started inviting my friends to collaborate with me and I was able to turn it into what it is today with the help of Wane and the galleries or companies that saw the value in it. Not to mention I love establishing brands and marketing.
Can you tell us about ‘BunnyKitty’ when this character was born in early 2001 ?
BunnyKitty was first drawn in 2001. My peers were waiting for me to do my own company since I had helped establish so many skate brands. When I came with BunnyKitty they didn’t get it at the time. Why would this hardcore graffiti writer do something so cute. I stuck to my guns. I wanted an i.p. that would one day compete with Sanrio…so that’s what I went for. I created a cast of characters and have told their stories in the street. So in a sense BK and friends are like Sanrio but without the big business behind it, yet! But it is well loved and respected. And that feels very satisfying to me. More good things to come.
Why do you have cat and rabbit as your characters ?
Well it’s a cat in a bunny suit. But there are rabbits in the story. I was painting rabbits and cats next to my graffiti for many years before BunnyKitty. One day I just decided to merge the two…and the whole story just flowed from there.
Can you explain about ‘BunnyKitty’ why your work is drastically contrasted when you put the cuteness, naughtiness, fierce, violence, and graffiti all together ?
Bunnykitty to me is like Art imitating life. My life and the life of my family and friends mixed into it. BunnyKitty is a true story that I live everyday. It’s not fantasy. So it comes from a really real place. And people see it that way. It’s grown from a very organic place. And I’ve seen it’s influence on popular culture through the years
Is there any more interesting background story behind Bunny Kitty ?
that the cat in suit was really a cat I owned named Daisy. She continues to live on through BunnyKitty. Inspiring good things from her fans and public.
How do you spend your free time besides graffiti ?
I spend a lot of time with my family. I like to work out, surf, play basketball and music. I love to jam with my friends. I play bass and I sing.
How do you see the direction and growth of graffiti and street art in your perspective ?
I looks at writers sort of like the story of the Jedi in Star Wars. They almost become obscured by the Street art movement. So we are doing everything we can to preserve out heritage and our ancestors that established the movement. I am really nothing without them. So I strongly encourage that people in street art and the fans to learn about the graffiti movements. Especially the ones that use spray paint.
What about graffiti / street art in Asia ?
I started painting Asia in the early 2000s. Korea, mainland China mostly. There wasn’t a big movement at that time. But it’s come so far and there are great artist that are producing some really beautiful works at the moment. When it come to letters it would be nice to see the influence and style coming from a particular region rather than the internet.
What is your most memorable graffiti experience ?
so many to mention. But probably the COD 1999 Scandinavian tour with Wane, Dash, Virus, Wen, Cover and Sebar. I told myself on that tour that I would become more letter sentric and I have.
What is your work code ?
Persistence is key in developing your craft. Style will be developed when you check in everyday.
